Complete material list โ€” one trip

Decking Surface
60
Pressure-Treated Decking Boards (8 ft)

60 boards โ€” includes 10% waste for end cuts

Tip: Let PT boards acclimate on-site 48 hours. Composite boards can be installed immediately.

4
Deck Screws (3", coated, 1 lb box)

4 lb โ€” coated screws resist corrosion and won't stain PT lumber

Tip: Pre-drill near board ends to prevent splitting.

Framing
14
2ร—8 Pressure-Treated Joists (8 ft)

14 joists at true 16" on center + 1 rim joist

4
2ร—10 Pressure-Treated Beam Boards (8 ft)

4 boards โ€” 1 doubled beam spanning deck length. Beam runs perpendicular to joists, sits on posts.

Tip: Beams are doubled 2ร—10s bolted together. Size up to 2ร—12 for spans over 10 ft between posts.

28
Joist Hangers โ€” Galvanized

28 hangers โ€” one each end of each joist

Tip: Only use galvanized or stainless hardware with PT lumber โ€” plain steel corrodes within 2 years.

1
Post Cap Hardware (bag)

Caps connect posts to beam โ€” required for structural stability

1
Construction Adhesive

Seal beam-to-post connections before bolting

Posts & Foundation
5
4ร—4 Pressure-Treated Posts

5 posts โ€” add 2+ ft to deck height for below-grade burial

Tip: Burial depth must be below your local frost line โ€” typically 36โ€“42" in cold climates. Check local code.

10
Quikrete 80 lb Concrete Bags

10 bags โ€” 2 bags per post hole

Tip: Dry-pour method works great for fence posts โ€” pour dry, add water, tamp. No mixer needed.

Ledger Attachment
2
2ร—8 Pressure-Treated Ledger Board (8 ft)

2 boards โ€” bolts to house rim joist, replaces the house-side rim joist

CRITICAL: Ledger must bolt to house structural rim joist โ€” not siding, sheathing, or trim. Improper ledger attachment is the #1 cause of deck collapses.

24
1/2" ร— 3" Lag Bolts + Washers (box)

24 lag bolts โ€” double-staggered every 16" along ledger length

Tip: LedgerLOK structural screws are a code-approved alternative โ€” no pre-drilling, faster install.

Tools & Miscellaneous
1
Speed Square + Chalk Line

Keep boards straight and square โ€” you'll use both constantly

1
Post Base Hardware (bag)

Adjustable post bases allow exact positioning before concrete sets

Before you start

Pull a building permit โ€” required for most decks over 200 sq ft or 30\" above grade. Call 811 before digging (free, required by law). Verify your post spacing and beam size with local code โ€” spans vary by lumber species and load requirements.

๐Ÿ“ How we calculated this

โ€ข Deck boards: rows ร— (length รท 8 ft boards) + 10% waste

โ€ข Joists: true 16" OC (1 per 1.333 ft) + 1 rim joist

โ€ข Beam: doubled 2ร—10s, 1 beam row (extra row for decks over 12 ft wide)

โ€ข Posts: perimeter only โ€” 3 open sides (house side uses ledger)

โ€ข Concrete: 2 ร— 80 lb bags per post hole

โ€ข Screws: 1 lb per 50 sq ft (industry standard)

โ€ข Lag bolts: double-staggered every 16" along 16 ft ledger
