Best Exterior Paint for Wood in 2026

Wood is the most demanding surface you can paint outside. It swells when it rains, shrinks in August, and cedar or redwood will bleed brown tannin stains straight through a cheap topcoat. So the right question isn't "what's the best exterior paint" in the abstract. It's what's best for the job in front of you: a whole house, a fence, or bare boards that have never seen paint. Here's how I'd split it.

What actually matters on wood

Three things separate paint that lasts 12 years on wood from paint that peels in 4. Flexibility, because a brittle film cracks when boards move. Adhesion, which is mostly about prep and primer rather than the topcoat. And UV-stable pigment, which decides whether your navy blue is still navy in 2031. Sheen matters less than people think; satin and low-lustre both perform well on siding, while flat hides surface flaws on rough boards.

Whatever you choose, the math stays the same: exterior paint covers roughly 250 to 350 square feet per gallon per coat on smooth wood, and meaningfully less on rough-sawn boards that drink paint.

Repainting a whole house

This is where spending up makes sense, because labor dwarfs material cost.
