Short answer: concrete cracks. All of it, eventually. The material shrinks as it cures and it's strong in compression but weak in tension, so when shrinkage pulls harder than the slab can stretch, something gives. The whole game is controlling where and how big. So the real question isn't why your slab cracked. It's whether the crack you're looking at is the normal kind or the kind that means something under the slab went wrong.
The 60-second diagnosis
Get a tape measure and look at three things: width, edges, and pattern.
Hairline cracks, meaning 1/8 inch or narrower, with both sides sitting flush at the same height, are shrinkage cracks. Cosmetic. Every slab on your street has them. A tight map of shallow surface cracks that looks like dried mud, called crazing, is also cosmetic; the surface dried too fast, usually on a hot or windy pour day.
Now the bad ones. A crack wider than 1/4 inch, a crack where one side sits higher than the other, or a crack that keeps growing month over month is not shrinkage. That's the ground moving: washed-out or poorly compacted fill, tree roots, frost heave, or water getting underneath. Settlement cracks tell you the base failed, and no surface product fixes a base.
Why new slabs crack in the first week
Four causes account for nearly all of it.
- Too much water in the mix. Extra water makes concrete easy to work and weak when cured, and the surplus has to evaporate out, which means more shrinkage. A soupy wheelbarrow mix is the most common DIY mistake there is. Quikrete 5000 wants about 3 quarts of water per 80-pound bag; when in doubt, mix stiffer than feels convenient.
- It dried too fast. Concrete doesn't dry, it cures, and it needs to hold moisture for days to build strength. A slab poured on a 95-degree July afternoon can lose its surface water before it even sets, which is exactly when plastic shrinkage cracks show up. Hot-weather pours belong in the early morning, on a dampened base, out of the wind.
- Nobody cured it. Keep the slab damp for at least 5 to 7 days: mist it and cover with plastic sheeting, or roll on a curing compound. Skipping this is why two identical pours can end up with one clean slab and one spiderwebbed one.
- No control joints. Since shrinkage cracking is guaranteed, you cut straight lines and make it crack there. Joints need to be a quarter of the slab's depth (1 inch deep on a 4-inch slab) and spaced at 2 to 3 times the thickness in feet, so a 4-inch slab gets joints every 8 to 12 feet. Cut them with a groover during the pour or saw them within about 12 hours. A crack running right down a joint isn't a failure. That's the system working.
Fixing what you've got
- Hairline crack inside or near a control joint: leave it alone. It's doing its job.
- Hairline to 1/2 inch, flush edges, out in the open: clean it out with a wire brush and vacuum, then fill with a flexible polymer sealant. Rigid patch in a moving crack pops out by the second winter; flexible sealant rides the movement. Sealing matters more than looks, because water in an open crack freezes, expands, and turns one crack into three.
- Crazing or surface flaking on a sound slab: a polymer resurfacer renews the top layer in one weekend. Pressure-wash first and follow the bag's mixing water exactly.
- Wide, offset, or growing cracks: stop shopping for filler. A slab that's sinking needs mudjacking or foam lifting, and a slab that's heaved or broken into shifting panels needs tear-out. Get two quotes and ask both contractors what they'll do about the base, because a new slab on the same bad base buys you the same cracks.
Pouring the replacement (or your next slab)
Compact the base in lifts, keep the water low, pour in mild weather or early morning, cut joints at the spacing above, and cure it damp for a week.
